Introducing Asher

Asher Henry Schultz

His first name will be Asher.  The Biblical Asher is regarded as the example of a virtuous man who with singlemindedness strives only for the general good.  Asher was a son of Jacob and progenitor of the tribe of Asher, known for their wisdom, beauty, and happiness.  In Hebrew, Asher means happy/lucky/blessed.  The “A” in Asher honors Brian’s grandfather Abraham Schultz.  Papa Abe, although a man of few words, earned the respect of many, surprised with his quick observations, and lived up to his name as an “exalted father” both at home and professionally.  He would have been so proud of his great grandson.

His middle name will be Henry, honoring Kara’s grandfather Heinrich Martin.  Despite being dealt a difficult hand by losing his family in the Holocaust and surviving, Zadie appreciated each beautiful day.  He had an insatiable love of life, engaged in conversation with anyone and everyone, and was quite the ladies man.

His Hebrew name will be Asher Yisrael, honoring both Kara’s grandfather Jerry Marcus, whose Hebrew name was Yisrael, and Brian’s grandfather, Yisrael Yaacov Kirshstein, known as Yankel.  Jerry was a kind man.  He was always there for his family, thrived in political conversation, and adored his granddaughters.  Papa Yankel always put family first, quitting school at 15 to take care of his 4 brothers and sisters.  He was kind and patient, never losing his amazing sense of humor.
